When you’re talking to an Atlanta commercial roofing contractor you may hear a few roofing-related terms you’re not familiar with. While it’s everyday speak for those in the profession, many people simply don’t know what scuppers are or what flashing is. We’ve put together a list of some of the most common terms used by roofing contractors below so you’ll have a better understanding when discussing your roofing needs.
Flashing is installed in areas where the roof covering terminates or is interrupted making it susceptible to water entry; flashing is generally a sheet metal or membrane-base covering.
Substrate usually refers to the insulation or deck of the roof and is simply the surface on which the waterproofing membrane or roofing will be installed.
Blisters occur when air and/or water become trapped between the membrane and substrate or membrane and layers of felt; this is a common roof defect.
Counterflashing is used at the top edge of membrane base flashings to provide coverage and protection, and is an elastomeric or formed metal sheeting material.
Scuppers are sleeves soldered of sheet metal used on flat or built-up roofs to provide water drainage outlets through gravel stops or parapet walls.
Coating. If you’ve heard someone use the term roof coating, they’re referring to liquid chemical material that is applied to the surface of the roof for the purpose of thermal protection, waterproofing or aesthetics.
Fasteners can be anything that is used in securing the materials used when installing the roof including staples, bolts, nails, screws, clips, etc.
A membrane is primarily for waterproofing and is a flexible or semi-flexible material installed between the insulation and the roof’s surface.
These are some of the roofing terms you’re bound to hear when discussing the repair, coating or replacement of your roof. Whenever there’s something you aren’t clear about, always ask your contractor to explain; clear communication is key to your satisfaction and peace of mind!
